Best Trends of Summer 2020

Summer is one of my favorite seasons for fashion. I feel like the summer months are the perfect time for people to let loose and experiment. While most of us have had a pretty chill summer due to the continuation of Covid, trends this summer have had more of a laid back vibe. Here are some of my favorite styles from this summer:

Boyfriend sweat shorts

These have become a staple for many and honestly, I have been trying to snag a pair for months but they seem to be consistently sold out. A huge trend during the spring months of Covid was full sweat suits, but with the weather warming up, designers have innovated the boyfriend sweat shorts.

I have seen these at Aritzia, Mayfair, and Nike, however you could get away with finding a cheap pair at Zaful or Shein.

Since these shorts are so simple, they can be paired with pretty much anything, but I would recommend a basic tank top, graphic tee, or oversized sweatshirt.

Here are some ways you can style this item:

Colorful Air Force 1s

If you are a student at Santa Clara, chances are you either have a pair of the basic white Nike Air Force 1’s, or you have a friend who has them. These have become the standard shoe for going out or running around campus, and one of the things I love most about this shoe is that you can even pair them with a skirt or dress to dress them up. A trend that I have been SUPER excited about this summer is colorful Air Force 1s! Nike is making tons of new designs and color combos to put a twist on the classic shoe. Since fashion has been so simple recently, I think that these are the perfect shoes to add some flair to a basic outfit.

Here are some of my favorites:

Biker Shorts/ Big Tees

Biker shorts have been on the rise for a while now, making their way out of the athletic category into loungewear. Nowadays it's hard to go on social media without seeing the staple short. I absolutely love biker shorts. Not only are they comfortable and flattering, they are perfect for any activity and pair amazingly with an oversized graphic tee and great for the summer heat. And the best part is that you can fool people into thinking that you worked out even if you’ve been sitting around watching netflix all day.

Tie Dye

Tie Dye was first popular in the 60s and has made an insane comeback recently. First Tie Dye was a fun activity to pass time during quarantine but it has turned into a phenomenon and is sold literally everywhere. I recently reorganized my closet at home and was in shock of how much tie dye I have acquired recently. That being said, this is a super fun trend that I think is here to stay. Tie Dye is most common in sweatsuits and oversized tees, but my favorite way to wear Tie Dye is through accents. For example, Tie Dye socks, headband, hat, or even mask! This way you aren’t walking around like a sensory overload, but you are still adding some creativity to your outfits.

Here is some of my Tie Dye inspo from this season:

Matching Sweatsuits

I did touch on this while talking about Boyfriend sweat shorts, and although this was more of a spring trend, matching sweatsuits are still very much in and are positively coming back strong for the fall. A lot of companies have been creating very cool, aesthetic sweatshirts and pairing them with the same color sweatpants. You can find these in tons of colors, specifically pastel, which has been super popular recently. This is perfect for lounging around while still looking chic and put together. You can wear these pieces separately or together and you will look amazing regardless.

Here are some examples:

Gold Hoops & Chunky Gold Necklaces

Adding accessories can make or break an outfit and, if chosen well, can add just the “oomf” you’re looking for (as seen with the sweat sets above.) The trend I've seen recently, and I'm sure most of you have seen around TikTok (lol), is simple gold jewelry. Grab a pair of small gold hoops and a chunky gold necklace to step up your game. These two things can make a basic outfit look classy or draw attention to your sun kissed face.

Here are some great examples of layering that chunky jewelry:

Bucket hats

Bucket hats have been trending off and on for years and are back and better than ever. This is the perfect summer hat. I have seen it in pastels which I LOVE and other fun colors as well. You can throw on a bucket hat when you are headed to the beach, hanging around town, or even going out to lunch. I recently purchased a Tie Dye bucket hat and I am obsessed.
